How to choose a Retirement Flat

The first questions to ask yourself when choosing a retirement home is regarding the location.

  • Do you want to be close to the Doctors, restaurants, supermarket, theatre, family, friends?
  • Would you prefer to be a little further out, if so, how far away is the bus stop?
  • how far away is the train station?
  • The next thing to consider is the living facilities, do you have any particular requirements?
  • Can you easily access the bath, or do you need a shower ?
  • Is there enough storage space?
  • Are doors wide enough for mobility problems?
  • Can you reach the switches and plugs?
  • How noisy are the rooms; is there any soundproofing?
  • How far away is the communal laundry?

Before making a final decision, you should consider the effects of any restrictions, the level of annual service charges and other costs such as council tax and utility bills, not just the initial purchase price of the property.
